Will there be a scar when I get a plastic surgery procedure done?
Like any other surgery, plastic surgery procedures will also produce a scar. A cut with the surgical knife is just like any other injury, but for the fact that it is a controlled one. We all heal by scarring and hence there will be a scar. However, because the plastic surgeon uses certain refined techniques, the scar is not only less but more acceptable. Quite often, depending on the area of surgery, the surgeon tries to hide the scar by either making the cut inside the mouth or nose or hairline or placing the final scar in such a way that it gets hidden by undergarments.

Does the plastic surgeon use plastic?
No! The plastic surgeon uses patient’s own tissues to correct a defect. These tissues can be skin, muscle, bone, cartilage, fat or fascia. Tissues are reshaped before use.Sometimes, in certain circumstances, the plastic surgeon also uses artificial materials such as silicone, porous polyethylene or poly-tetrafluoro-ethylene. These are called implants and are usually used to augment some areas. While these materials are safe to use, there is a small risk that it may not suit an individual patient, in which case it might get rejected by the body.

Is plastic surgery only for the young?
While plastic surgery procedures are not age related, in some instances the elasticity and tone of skin will have a final bearing on the result. Whether you are a fit candidate or not will be decided by the surgeon after examining you. Similarly, if you have comorbid conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure or other medical illness, then those need to be addressed first before embarking on surgery.

What are the risks involved?
If all necessary precautions are taken then these procedures are usually safe. Apart from risks of anaesthesia, which are negligible, the biggest problem is patient’s dissatisfaction with the results. The surgeon does usually explain to the patient the possibility of him/her not liking the final results. The problem arises when the patient’s expectations may not match the surgeon’s idea of the final result. Hence it is important for the patients to convey to the surgeon their exact expectations and also try to understand the final outcome of the actual procedure.

Is plastic surgery very expensive?
In our country it is not expensive. It costs just as much as any other surgery would cost. Of course if an implant is used then that would be at an additional cost as they are presently imported and the price would vary depending on the manufacturer as well as the forex rates.

Cost of surgery would also depend on the type of hospital – whether a “five star” hospital or otherwise is selected.

Inspite of all this total cost of plastic surgeries in India are lower than most other countries without compromises on the quality.

Please note that some plastic surgery procedures are not covered by Insurance companies.
