Otherwise known as congenital defects, there are quite a few that are managed by a plastic surgeon. The most common among them are cleft lip, cleft palate, craniofacial anomalies, hand anomalies, genital defects and so on.

CLEFT LIP

This condition, where the upper lip of the child is split, happens in about 1 in 600 live births. It could be one sided or affect both sides of the lip. The nose could also be deformed because of the deficiency of the lip and adjoining tissues.

A simple explanation as to why a cleft lip happens is that the face is developed by fusion of multiple segments and if this fusion does not take place properly a defect is produced. Correction of this condition is done in stages. It would also involve the services of an orthodontist (dentist). The treatment sometimes starts immediately after birth and continues till adulthood.

The cleft of the lip may be present along with cleft of the palate or happen without it. Cleft palate needs to be corrected before the child starts to speak as otherwise speech may be affected if this defect is not closed.

Other craniofacial anomalies area also corrected by a plastic surgeon.

GENITAL DEFECTS AND HAND DEFECTS

The external genitalia gets differentiated into male and female about the sixth week of intra-uterine life. If this development does not take place properly certain mal-formations can happen which lead on to ambiguous external genitalia. Some of the conditions that happen are hypospadias, inter-sex conditions, and vaginal malformations. These are also corrected by the plastic surgeon.

Hand is another area where congenital malformations can happen. This may be in the form of fusion of fingers, lack of development of fingers or thumb, or super-numeric fingers. These conditions would require the expertise of a plastic surgeon.
